Think tank

START was founded in 1992 to address the disparity in climate change research coming from Africa and Asia (the global south vs. North America and Europe (the global north). Many of the predicted effects of climate change will disproportionately affect developing countries as sea level rise threatens growing cities, and rain fed agriculture suffers from changing precipitation patterns. Scientists and policy-makers in these countries need tools and information to adapt to climate change. START's mission is to build the capacity of scientists and policy-makers in developing countries to respond to the threats and opportunities of climate change. In our first decade, START focused on finding promising scientists and building their skills via research grants, training programs, and PhD student fellowships. In the past decade, START has moved towards a more holistic approach of bringing different groups of people together to solve common problems. START integrates social and natural scientists' work on climate change, as well as brings together scientists, practitioners, community members, and decision makers to solve regional problems. START achieves our mission by offering training events, interdisciplinary research grants, science-policy dialogues and other events and on-going programs.
