KERC was established to engage in wide-ranging research on the socio-economic conditions of the Kyushu region, not only conducting research but also proposing strategies and guidelines for Kyushu's future development. In its early years, KERC undertook research on Kyushu's post-war reconstruction, thus contributing to the development of the Kyushu economy and society. In the 1970s, KERC began to conduct contract research and started publishing its White Paper on the Kyushu Economy. KERC's main aims are to (1) undertake contract research committed by the central and local governments and (2) offer information services to member institutions and the people of Kyushu. Today, trends toward decentralization and stronger relationships with other Asian nations are having a significant impact on Kyushu, and KERC's goals are shifting to meet the changing needs of the region.
